Ripponden rooflights for homes above the Ryburn

Rooflights and skylights for Ripponden homes in the Ryburn valley

Ripponden stands on the River Ryburn, the main settlement of a group of villages in the valley, and the road out of the village climbs steeply. We choose the rooflight to suit the room and the slope outside.

Ripponden, a village on the River Ryburn and a civil parish in its own right, is the main settlement of a group of villages in the Ryburn valley. The Old Bridge Inn, a Grade II listed building dated to 1307, stands beside the packhorse bridge, and Stones Methodist Church was built in 1902. The village is on the Calderdale Way, a 50-mile circular walk around the hills and valleys of Calderdale, and the climb out of the village has an average gradient of 8.6 per cent. The Rishworth branch line from Sowerby Bridge once served Ripponden, closing to passengers in 1929 and completely in 1958.

The steep climb matters more to a rooflight than it sounds. Ground that climbs makes reaching a roof, and getting at a window from outside, harder than on a flat street. Inside, a rooflight may serve a small landing, a room in the roof or a stair, and each is used differently. So we begin each survey with the practical questions. Who will open the window? Where is the handle? How does the outside glass get cleaned on a roof you cannot easily approach? The fixed written quote comes after the answers.

What suits roofs in the valley

Conservation rooflights for older or protected roofs, roof windows and VELUX windows for lofts, sun tunnels for small dark landings, and electric opening for windows that sit out of reach.

Living with it up the valley

  • A window high in a small roof is hard to touch, so a rod, a remote or a solar motor is agreed at the survey.
  • VELUX offers a rain sensor on its electric and solar roof windows, which shuts the window at the first drops while you are out.
  • With steep ground outside, nobody wants a ladder against the wall, so we show how each model is cleaned from inside.
  • In a roof room a blind that fully darkens the window is part of the order, and on a landing a light filter is often enough.

Steep ground, older roofs and small landings

These are the Ripponden questions that matter most for a roof window or sun tunnel: how to reach it, which rules apply to the address, and what to do with a dark landing.

Our house stands on a steep slope. Does that change how we reach and clean a roof window?

The climb out of Ripponden has an average gradient of 8.6 per cent, and the village sits in the Ryburn valley, about 140 metres above sea level at the centre. If your house is on sloping ground, parts of the roof may be a long way from any safe place to stand. That affects the choice of window more than it affects the glass.

Operate it from the room

Think about every action you will repeat. Opening, closing, drawing the blind and wiping the glass are the four. If the window is high, opening and the blind should run from the same remote or motor. If it is lower, a handle you can reach comfortably is enough. What a motor changes is set out in electric and solar opening.

Clean it from the room

Some roof windows pivot or tilt so you can wipe the outer pane from inside. Others are fixed and need a ladder. On steep ground the first kind is easier to live with. Ask for it by name at the survey.

Replacing without scaffolding

Access also affects the fitting. On some roofs a replacement can be done without scaffolding, and our guide to replacing a skylight without scaffolding explains when that is possible. We look at the access before we write the quote.

The blind on a high window

A high window in a roof room makes the blind the hardest part. If you cannot reach the blind, it stays open, and a bedroom gets bright at five in the morning. Choose a blind that runs by the same handset as the window, or one a pole can work. For a landing or a stair window, a light filter is plenty. Our blinds and controls guide shows the choices.

Rain, and the empty house

Where the house is empty by day, an electric or solar window fitted with VELUX's rain sensor shuts when the first drops fall. Only those models have it, set out in the rain sensor guide.

Which rules apply if our house is in or near a conservation area?

The conservation areas recorded in Ripponden include Ripponden itself, designated in 1972, and Mill Bank and Cottonstones, designated in 1976. Calderdale Council covers them, and boundaries are mapped on planning.data.gov.uk. Living in one does not alone rule out a rooflight in England. Article 4 directions apply in parts of the village as well, and what they restrict depends on the address, so we ask Calderdale Council about yours before we quote.

Protected buildings

The Old Bridge Inn, beside the packhorse bridge, is one of the oldest pubs in Yorkshire. That is useful background, though it says nothing about your own roof.

Ripponden's entries on Historic England's list include Ripponden Old Bridge at Grade II*, the Elland Road Bridge and 1/3 Mill Fold. A listed house is a different case: adding or changing a rooflight there almost always calls for listed building consent first, and that consent shapes what goes in. The page on listed houses and conservation rooflights sets out the route.

A low-profile option

If your roof is stone slate or Welsh slate, a conservation rooflight lies flush with it and keeps a slim bar across the glass. It looks modest from the lane. VELUX conservation roof windows are one choice, and there are others to compare.

If the roof is older

Where a house has an old roof, we look at the covering and the timbers before suggesting a window, because the flashing kit follows the covering and the window width follows the rafters. We cannot tell what you have from a map of the street, so we go up and look. It is the main reason a survey beats an estimate from a photograph.

Everyone else

For a house with no Article 4 direction or planning condition in the way, a rooflight is generally permitted development within limits. A slope facing the side brings conditions of its own. The planning guide covers all of it.

Before you commit

Ask the address question first. The rooflight is easy to change on paper and hard to change on the roof.

Our cottage landing is small and dark. Should it be a window or a sun tunnel?

Small landings are common in older cottages and terraces, with a stair that turns in the middle of the house. They tend to be dark by day, even with the doors open. There are two ways to fix that.

The sun tunnel

A sun tunnel takes light from a roof dome down a tube to a diffuser in an opening cut in the ceiling. It does not open and has no view, so there is nothing to reach and nothing to forget. For a landing that is only walked through, that suits well. It needs a clear route through the roof space. Our page on rooms that suit a sun tunnel sets out what works.

The roof window

If you want to open the window, look out or air a landing, a roof window is the answer. It adds the habit of opening, closing and shading. Because a landing ceiling is usually high, the window is out of reach, which brings in the rod or motor decision again.

How to decide

Ask what the space is for. A landing you only pass through suits a sun tunnel. A landing that doubles as a study corner, or a small room at the top of the stairs, suits a window you can open. Where the roof is small, we measure on the roof before we say what fits. The guide to living with a rooflight may help you picture it.

Making the choice

It also helps to know how often the landing is used. A landing crossed all day long asks for something that works without effort. One visited now and then asks for much less.

Stand on the landing and picture a normal morning. If you would open the window, it should be a window. If you would not, the sun tunnel is the simpler answer and the less to maintain. We talk it through with you at the survey.

Building control

If the work forms part of a loft conversion, the new floor must have a safe way out, and the Building Regulations guide covers that. Whether a sun tunnel on its own needs Building Regulations approval depends on the job, and we check it at the survey.

Ripponden: what people ask first

Which council decides planning for a house in Ripponden?

Calderdale Council. Ripponden is in Calderdale, and we ask the council about your address before we quote. A registered building control approver can handle building control instead of the council.

Is Ripponden counted as part of Halifax?

No. Ripponden is a separate village with its own civil parish, on the River Ryburn, and its planning and building control questions go to Calderdale Council. Enter your postcode above if you are unsure whether we cover your address.

Can a sun tunnel go in a small cottage roof?

It can, as long as there is a clear route from the roof to the ceiling. We look at the roof space during the survey, and if something is in the way, a flexible tube may bend round it. Our page on rigid and flexible tubes explains the difference.

What if I want an old roof window replaced with an electric one?

Often that works in the same opening. We check the size of the old window and the wiring route, or choose a solar model that needs none. See swapping a fixed rooflight for an opening one.

Is the survey free?

Yes. We look at the roof, the room and the access outside, talk through the controls and the blind.

Is the fitting guaranteed?

The way a window or sun tunnel is fitted into a Ripponden roof comes with a 10-year workmanship guarantee. The makers' own guarantees on the products differ.
