Sound Skylights fits new skylights and replaces old ones in homes across Stockport and roughly 30 road miles around it. The trade calls them rooflights, homeowners tend to say skylights, and we answer to both. What we care about is the part after the fitting: whoever ends up having to open it, pull the blind across, wipe the glass and shut it when the weather turns.

That is where the name comes from. A sound choice is one that keeps working on an ordinary Tuesday, with nobody thinking about it. Everything on this site, and everything we say at a survey, is aimed at that.

The work

What we fit and replace

We install and replace the full run of daylight products for houses: roof lanterns on flat-roofed extensions, flat roof rooflights, pitched roof windows including VELUX windows and other makers' models, electric opening rooflights, energy-efficient rooflights, walk-on rooflights, slim conservation rooflights and sun tunnels. We also swap out misted rooflights where the seal between the panes has gone.

Homes come first. A small commercial job, such as an office above a shop or a studio with a flat roof, is welcome too, and it gets the same survey and the same paperwork.

The starting point

Why the first question is about the room

Two rooflights can share a size and a price bracket and still be very different to live with. A centre-pivot window over a low loft bed is easy to reach by hand. The same window above a stairwell needs a control rod or a motor, or it simply never gets opened. A bathroom wants a blind that copes with steam. A child's bedroom raises questions about restrictors, remotes kept up high and which window has to stay usable as a way out in a fire.

So before we talk about makers or glass, we ask who will be opening it, how far up it will be, what happens in the room, and whether there are young children or an older relative in the house. The answer narrows the choice quickly, and it stops a good-looking unit turning into a daily annoyance.

What we ask at the start

  • Who opens it, and can they reach it standing on the floor?
  • Is it a bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, landing or office?
  • Will it need to be dark for sleeping, or shaded from strong sun?
  • Does a young child or an older relative use the room?
  • Can the outside glass be reached for cleaning, and from where?

The order of work

From the first visit to the day we leave

Every job starts with a visit to your home, at no charge. We go up to see the covering, the pitch and the timbers, then come down to study the ceiling and the room and talk through how it will be used. A photo cannot set the price, but one sent to WhatsApp 07880 284133 lets us turn up with the right questions.

After the visit, a fixed written quote follows by email, with nothing to sign until you are ready. On the regulations side, where the work is notifiable, we handle the Building Regulations notification with the council's building control team or a registered building control approver. Separately, we check planning. In England, adding a rooflight or roof window to a house is usually permitted development under Class C, so it does not need a planning application, provided it meets the Class C limits and conditions. Every one of those limits is listed in our planning guide.

On the day of fitting, the opening is formed or the old unit taken out, the new one is set in and weathered, and the inside is finished to the agreed point. Before we go, you see the handle or remote working, try the blind, and learn how to reach the outer glass for a wipe. Our 10-year workmanship guarantee, issued as a document, stands behind the fitting.

Four stages, in order

  1. Survey A free visit to see the roof, the ceiling and the room.
  2. Fixed written quote Sent after the survey, so you can decide in your own time.
  3. Fitting The unit goes in and the finish inside is completed as agreed.
  4. Handover We run through the handle, the blind and the cleaning on the last day.

The patch

Homes around Stockport and beyond the borough

We are based in Stockport and work about 30 road miles out in every direction: south and east Greater Manchester, north and east Cheshire and the High Peak edge. Over that distance the houses change a lot. Edgeley, Heaton Norris and Reddish have streets of red-brick Victorian terraces whose lofts and back additions are short of light. The Heatons and Davenport have larger Victorian and Edwardian villas with tall ceilings. Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme and Hazel Grove add semis and bungalows built in the interwar and post-war years. Up on the hill edge, Marple and Romiley have houses of stone as well as brick.

We have no showroom and no public premises. We come to you, and the survey happens in the room where the skylight will go. The areas page lists the towns and villages we cover.

The paperwork

What you can hold us to

We keep our promises short so they can be kept. The survey costs you nothing. You get the figure as a fixed written quote before you commit. The notification is handled where the job needs one. The workmanship is guaranteed for ten years, and the details of that sit on our guarantee page. If you want to know how daily use plays out for each product before you book, living with a rooflight goes through it one type at a time.

A rooflight should be easy to open, easy to shade and easy to clean, by whoever lives under it.
