We stand behind the fitting of each skylight and rooflight we install or replace with our 10-year workmanship guarantee, and you get it as a written document for your records. This page explains in general terms what that means. The document you receive with the job is the one that applies, and where this page and that document differ, the document wins.
Nothing here takes away your legal rights. Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, a service has to be carried out with reasonable care and skill whether or not a guarantee is offered, and our guarantee sits alongside those rights rather than replacing them.
Covered
The work we carried out
The guarantee is about workmanship: the way the job was done. If a fault shows up that comes from how we fitted the unit, we come back and put it right at no charge to you. In general that includes:
- how the rooflight, roof window, lantern or sun tunnel was fixed into the roof;
- the flashing, upstand and weathering work we carried out around it;
- the seals and joints we made between the unit and the roof covering;
- the trimming and support of any opening we formed;
- the inside finish we agreed to do, such as the reveal or lining around the frame.
A leak at the junction between our flashing and the roof, a frame that has worked loose because it was not fixed properly, or a reveal we finished that has cracked away from the frame are the kind of things it is there for.
The product
The unit itself, and its maker's guarantee
The rooflight, roof window or sun tunnel is made by a manufacturer, and the product carries that maker's own guarantee. Makers' guarantees differ in what they cover and for how long, so we point you to the right one for the unit we supplied. Where we supplied the unit, your legal rights over it (that it is of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described) are with us as the seller, so you can always come to us first. A sealed glass unit that mists between the panes, a motor that stops working or a blind that fails is usually a question for the maker's guarantee. If you are not sure which it is, tell us anyway. We will look at it and help you take it to the maker where that is the right route.
| The problem | Usually a question for |
|---|---|
| Water getting in where the unit meets the roof | Us, under the workmanship guarantee |
| Frame or reveal we fitted coming loose | Us, under the workmanship guarantee |
| Misting between the panes | The maker's guarantee, with our help |
| Motor, remote or sensor fault | The maker's guarantee, with our help |
| Not sure | Us first, and we will say |
Not covered
What sits outside the guarantee
A guarantee on workmanship cannot cover things that were never part of our work, or damage that comes from somewhere else. In plain words, it does not cover:
- parts of the roof, ceiling or building we did not work on;
- damage from impact, such as a falling branch, a thrown ball or someone standing on glass that is not made to be walked on;
- storm damage or other events beyond ordinary weather;
- problems caused by blocked gutters, leaves or debris left on a flat roof, or other upkeep that was not done;
- changes, fixings or work by anyone else on or around the unit after we finished;
- condensation on the inner face of the glass that comes from damp air indoors, not from how the unit was fitted;
- normal wear, and marks or damage from use the maker's instructions advise against.
If you are unsure whether something is covered, ask. We would rather look and explain than leave you guessing.
Making a claim
How to tell us something is wrong
Send the details to info@soundskylightsstockport.co.uk, or to WhatsApp 07880 284133: the address of the job, roughly when it was done, what you have noticed and, if you can, a few photos from inside and out. If water is coming in, say so first and put a bowl or towel down to protect the room while you wait.
We will arrange to visit and look at the problem. If it comes from our workmanship, we put it right at no cost to you. If it turns out to be a product fault, we will explain why and help you raise it with the maker. If it is neither, we will tell you plainly what we found, so you can decide what to do next.
A claim, step by step
- Tell us Email or WhatsApp with the address, the date of the job and photos.
- We visit We look at the problem at the house.
- We explain Workmanship, product or something else, in plain words.
- We put it right If it is our workmanship, at no charge.
Your part
Simple habits that keep a rooflight working well
Keep the paperwork from the job somewhere safe, along with any maker's instructions. Clear leaves from gutters and flat roofs near the unit, clean the glass the way we showed you at handover, and ask before anyone fixes anything to the frame or the flashing. Our page on everyday care, type by type explains cleaning for each product.
