A pitched roof over a loft bedroom points towards a roof window, while a flat-roofed kitchen extension suits a lantern or a flat rooflight. A dark landing with a loft above it can take a sun tunnel, and an older slate roof can call for a slim conservation unit that sits low in the slates. A rooflight that has misted between the panes is its own job, and so is walk-on glass set into a terrace.

Replacing an old unit is as much a part of the work as fitting a new one. A roof window that sticks, has misted or sits too high to open can be swapped for one that suits the room better, sometimes in the same opening and sometimes with a different way of opening. The survey settles which.
