Hindley rooflights from weavers' town to commuter streets

Skylights and rooflights for Hindley homes in a former weaving and mining town

Hindley was a weaving and nail-making place with more than twenty collieries by the end of the 19th century, and today its households travel out to work. We choose rooflights for the room and the person using it.

Hindley is a town in the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, and for centuries it earned its living with its hands. Hand-loom weaving was a chief industry, each cottage having a weaving shop attached, and larger mills followed as the Industrial Revolution developed. Nail making was noted here between the 17th and 19th centuries, the first recorded coal mine dates from 1528, and by the end of the 19th century there were more than twenty collieries. A country village became a small, densely populated industrial town. Mining and cotton spinning have gone, and the pasture and ancient woodland of Borsdane Wood, a Local Nature Reserve, now sit beside the streets.

The houses that remain come from different chapters of that story. Victorian and Edwardian terraces in Lancashire cotton and coal towns are commonly red brick with Welsh slate roofs, mixed with later estates carrying concrete tiles. A slate roof calls for one kind of flashing and a concrete tile roof another, and a loft room asks different things of a window from a kitchen at the back. So the survey looks at the roof and the room, and then at how you live: who opens the window, who cleans the glass and what the blind has to do.

What suits Hindley's terraces, estates and extensions

Five fittings for the houses and rooms of a former mill and colliery town, from a loft window under slate to a tube of daylight for a landing.

Hindley rooflights in everyday use

  • A window under a slate slope is opened with a pole, a handset or a solar motor, and we match the method to how often you will use it.
  • A rear kitchen that gets the afternoon sun wants a blind made for the rooflight, whereas a landing may need no blind.
  • The outside of a flat rooflight is wiped from a ladder, and the outside of a roof window from within, so we explain which you have.
  • The survey sorts out the questions of who, where and how before the quote is written, so nothing arrives that does not suit.

Slate, tube and kitchen glass: Hindley questions

From a loft window in a terrace to a conservation area in the town centre, four questions that fit the houses and the history here.

Does a terrace with a slate roof need a different kind of loft window?

The general pattern in the region is red brick under Welsh slate, but we cannot see which roof you have from here, so the first thing at the survey is the covering. It matters because the roof window is fitted with a separate flashing kit made for a type of covering, and the kit has to match.

Why the covering counts

Slate lies flat and thin. Concrete tile is thicker and can be profiled, so the gap round the frame is sealed in a different way. The wrong kit lets water in at the corner, and that is a failure nobody enjoys at three in the morning. The write-up on dressing a frame into slate or tile shows what is involved, and why the kit has to suit the covering it sits in.

Opening a window you cannot reach

A loft room under a steep pitch puts the handle high. A pole works for an occasional window. If it is opened every day in a bedroom, electric or solar opening is easier to live with, and one remote can run both the window and the blind. See choosing between wired and solar windows.

The room under the roof

A terrace loft is a narrow room, and the window position changes how much of it you can use. A window set high lights the ceiling but not the floor. One set lower lets a person sit beside it. We stand in the room, look at the rafters and agree the position with you. How each type swings, and why it matters for the furniture beneath, is covered by the page on pivot and top-hung sashes.

Will a sun tunnel brighten a bathroom, and does it need a hole in the ceiling?

A town that grew dense and quickly can leave a room away from any outside wall. If a bathroom, a hall or a stair in your house sits under a loft, a sun tunnel is one way to bring daylight to it without a window you must open.

What goes where

A dome sits on the roof and gathers light. A tube runs down through the loft, and a diffuser fits the opening in the ceiling below, spreading the light across the room. That opening is cut into the ceiling, so you will see work in the room as well as on the roof. We tell you where the diffuser will sit and how the plaster is finished around it before anything is cut.

What it will not do

A tube gives daylight and no view. It does not open. In the evening a tube goes dark, and a ceiling light takes over. For a room where you want to look at the sky, such as a loft bedroom, a roof window is the better choice. Our page on choosing a straight or flexible tube shows how the run through the loft changes the light.

Fitting to a building with a loft in use

If the loft has been boarded and stored in, the run has to avoid whatever lives there. We look before we quote. The question is not whether a tube can be fitted but whether it brightens the room you care about, and the page on rooms where tubes work helps decide.

Bathroom verdict

For a windowless bathroom with a clear loft above, a tube is a calm answer. For a room you linger in, choose a window.

Which blind works over a flat rooflight in an extended kitchen?

A kitchen extended into the back garden catches the sun for hours, and a rooflight above the worktop can turn the room into a greenhouse by teatime. Commuter households that come home to a hot kitchen want the answer to be automatic, not another job.

Blinds made for the opening

A blind meant for a rooflight is held by side rails or by the frame, depending on the maker and model, so it stays in place on a flat or low-pitch opening where an ordinary blind would sag. Pleated fabrics soften the light, and a blackout one is for a room where you want it dark. Some blinds are worked by a pole and some by a motor. Blinds and controls sets out the choices.

Solar control glass

The other half of the answer is the glass. A solar control coating cuts the heat that comes through, which is a different question from the fabric under it. The page on solar control for rooflights explains where it helps and what it does to the colour of the light.

Cleaning the top

A flat rooflight on a single-storey extension is wiped from a ladder or from the garden. We say at the survey whether the roof can be reached, because a rooflight you cannot clean is one you notice for the wrong reasons. See putting a skylight in an existing flat roof for how the upstand is built.

Hindley Town Centre is a conservation area. Does that affect a loft window?

Planning.data.gov.uk records Hindley Town Centre as a conservation area, designated in 1989, and Wigan Council publishes a page on the conservation areas it looks after. Living inside one does not, by itself, take away your freedom to add a rooflight to a house; what changes things is the detail of the address and the roof. We check with Wigan Council before we quote, and the planning guide explains what can alter the position.

Churches, houses and listings

Historic England lists the Church of St Peter, the Church of St John (Methodist), the Church of All Saints and Hindley House, each at Grade II, among other buildings in the town. A rooflight on a listed building almost always requires listed building consent. The guide to listed buildings and rooflights shows how that process runs.

An old cottage roof

The surviving 18th-century cottage at 5 Deansgate is described as a rare example of a type once common in Hindley. If your own house is that old, or has an old roof, a flush conservation-style rooflight sits low and usually looks more settled from the street than a standard window. We bring a sample so you can judge it against your own roof, in the light of your own street. Nothing is ordered before the survey is done and the position on your address is clear.

What Hindley households ask

Who handles planning for a house in Hindley?

Wigan Council. It also publishes its conservation areas. Wigan Council's building control team can inspect the work, or you can use a registered building control approver instead. We check the address before we quote and tell you what we find.

Can we replace an old roof window with the same size?

It can be. Where a matching size exists, the new window goes into the existing opening and the lining indoors can usually stay. The label on the old sash gives the size code. See finding a VELUX size code.

Is it worth fitting a blind to a window in a landing?

Usually not. A landing is somewhere you pass through, so it rarely needs darkness. A bedroom or a nursery under the roof is where a blind is worth having, and we ask about the room at the survey.

Do we need building control for a roof window in a loft?

It depends on the work. A loft conversion is covered by the Building Regulations guide, and where the work is notifiable we file the notification for the roof windows we fit.

What guarantee do we get?

The workmanship on a Hindley roof is ours to guarantee for 10 years, while the makers' guarantees on their products differ. The controls, the blinds and the cleaning are explained at handover. See our guarantee.
