Our cottage landing is dark and the room beside it is tiny. What fits?
The mill housed its workforce in cottages, and a small cottage can have its stairs, landings and bedrooms packed close together. There is seldom space for a large window, and a landing in the middle of the plan may have no daylight at all. Small rooms are where the right rooflight makes the biggest difference, and where the wrong one is most obvious.
For the landing
A sun tunnel needs loft space above and a few feet of clear run. It brings in daylight and nothing else, so there is no handle to reach and no blind to fit. If the roof is shallow, a flexible tube can bend around a rafter. Our guide to rigid or flexible sun tunnels shows how the tube is picked.
For the small room
A compact roof window is enough to lift a box room. The question is how you will use it. A study needs a way to shade the screen, a bedroom needs blackout, and a nursery needs a handle and a restrictor out of a child's reach. Our guide to child-safe opening rooflights sets out what the makers offer.
Reach and rain
In a cottage roof the window can be within an arm's length of the bed, so a manual handle is fine. If you work from home or are out all day, VELUX fits a rain sensor to its electric and solar models, which closes the sash when rain begins. That is a gentle reassurance for a house left empty. We confirm the choice at the survey, with the loft in front of us.
Small rooms
Light the landing with a sun tunnel and the little room with a window sized to its slope.
